Coach: A Complete Guide to the Brand in 2026
Coach is one of the most familiar American fashion brands, and in 2026 its sales are rising strongly. Today the brand sells clothing, footwear and accessories in stores worldwide, although it was founded as a small leather workshop and later evolved into a handbag specialist. Its founding idea has remained constant for decades: well-made leather goods priced below the traditional European luxury houses. A federal court has described that segment as accessible luxury, separate from both mass-market fashion and true luxury.
Where Coach came from, who owns and runs it, how large the business has grown and what it sells are all explained in this guide. It also explains the difference between a full-price coach store and a coach outlet, a topic that frequently causes confusion. The numbers are dated to their sources, and any prices are observed market prices and not an official price list.
How a Manhattan Leather Workshop Became an American Label
In 1941, a tiny family-run leather workshop was set up in Manhattan, the business to which Coach traces its roots. In Coach’s own telling, six artisans toiled in a loft on 34th Street, making wallets, billfolds and other small leather goods aimed at men. Handbags came later, and so did the Coach name, which dates from about 1960 or 1961. Despite a lingering mistake, Miles and Lillian Cahn were never the original owners of the workshop.
Miles and Lillian Cahn became part of the business in 1946, and Miles was running the factory by around 1950. The Cahns took control in 1961, when they bought the shares of the original owners. Lillian Cahn is reported to have suggested adding women’s handbags, a decision that transformed the company. Recognition for glovetanned leather is given to Miles Cahn; it is a finish modeled on the way a worn baseball glove becomes softer with wear.
The Bonnie Cashin Era
Bonnie Cashin, who served as Coach’s first lead designer, is the designer most closely tied to Coach in its early days. She is said to have worked under contract rather than as an employee, and she was not a co-founder coach knitwear of the company. When exactly she started is slightly unclear, since Coach’s own pages cite both 1961 and 1962. There is no doubt, however, that she kept designing for Coach until 1974.
In 1964 Cashin introduced the brass turnlock closure, which Coach says was based on the toggle on the top of her convertible. Brighter colors, side pockets and coin-purse details also count among her credited contributions, and they relaxed the brand’s look. The turnlock is to this day one of the best-known Coach details, and it appears on bags such as the Cassie crossbody.
Owners, Listings and the Birth of Tapestry
In July 1985, Coach was purchased by Sara Lee Corporation. In October 2000 Coach went public, and the following year Sara Lee is said to have completely exited. Coach’s Signature collection, with the “C” monogram, debuted in 2001, so the pattern is not the mid-century heritage motif it can appear to be. The parent company, Coach, Inc., took the name Tapestry, Inc. on 31 October 2017, and its stock symbol moved from COH to TPR.
The change of name affected only the parent company; the Coach brand, its stores and its products were not renamed. Coach, Inc. had bought Stuart Weitzman in 2015, but Tapestry offloaded the footwear brand to Caleres in a deal that was completed on 4 August 2025. In 2026 Tapestry owns only two brands, Coach and Kate Spade, and Coach is by far the more substantial of the two.
Why the Capri Deal Never Closed
On 10 August 2023, Tapestry announced a pact to purchase Capri Holdings, the owner of Michael Kors, Versace and Jimmy Choo. In April 2024 the Federal Trade Commission challenged the deal, seeking a preliminary injunction from a federal court to block it. A federal judge in the Southern District of New York granted that preliminary injunction on 24 October 2024. It was not a final ruling on the merits, but it stopped the companies from closing while the challenge continued.
An accessible luxury handbag segment, different from both mass-market bags and true luxury, was recognized as real by the court in its decision. Arguing that the legal process was unlikely to finish before their February 2025 deadline, Tapestry and Capri terminated their agreement on 14 November 2024. As the acquisition was never completed, Tapestry has no ownership of any Michael Kors, Versace or Jimmy Choo business.
Who Leads Coach Now
At the parent company, Tapestry, Joanne Crevoiserat serves as chief executive. The brand itself is run by Todd Kahn, Coach’s CEO and brand president, having taken the job on an interim basis in July 2020 and become permanent in April 2021. The creative side belongs to Stuart Vevers, whose appointment was announced in June 2013.
Vevers is still Coach’s creative director in 2026, his first Coach collection having reportedly been presented in February 2014. Before Coach, he is reported to have been creative director at Loewe after a period at Mulberry. Under his direction, Coach has drawn on its archive, reissuing older designs and refashioning vintage shapes into new bags such as the Tabby. The Cunard Building in New York was the venue for his Fall 2026 collection on 11 February 2026.
Sizing Up Coach
Tapestry’s annual report for the fiscal year ended 27 June 2026 offers the most complete picture of Coach’s overall scale. Coach’s net sales totaled $6,914.7 million, up 24% on the prior year, while Tapestry as a whole reported $8,004.2 million. Put simply, roughly 86% of group sales came from Coach.
Coach’s directly operated store count reached 973 at the end of that fiscal year: 336 in North America and 637 outside North America. A figure of about 1,299 stores also appears in some sources, but it counts every Tapestry store rather than Coach alone. Tapestry also reported that the average unit retail price of Coach handbags grew at a mid-teens percentage rate during the year. Part of the increase, according to the company, is linked to reduced promotional activity.

What Coach Sells: Bags, Clothing and Shoes
Structured icons share space with soft, slouchy leather in coach handbags today, with handbags still the heart of the business. Built on a 1970s archive shape, the Tabby arrived in 2019; the Rogue first appeared in 2016 and returned in 2021; and the Brooklyn, a relaxed coach shoulder bag, followed in August 2024. After appearing on the Fall 2024 runway, the Empire Carryall was released in February 2025. Observed prices varied widely: the Kisslock Frame Bag, said to have opened the Fall 2026 show, was observed at $350, and a Rogue 25 in alligator was seen at $8,000, the highest bag price observed. Since the Coach Originals line remakes archive designs as new bags, the bags are new reissues rather than vintage.
Ready-to-wear is now a significant part of the range, and coach clothing for Fall 2026 included varsity jackets in leather and in leather with wool, the brand’s first all-shearling varsity jacket, peacoats and suede coats. At the same show, the label introduced blazers, flared trousers, A-line skirts, high-collar, floor-length dresses and all-gender jacquard knits. For footwear, the range includes sneakers such as the Soho Sneaker and the laceless Skate Sneaker, and fashion press mentioned loafers, clogs, booties and sandals for fall. Beyond that, Coach operates Coach (Re)Loved, launched in 2021 and reported to span trade-ins, restored bags and upcycled pieces, as well as Coachtopia, a circular-design sub-brand that debuted on 20 April 2023.
Full-Price Coach Store, Coach Outlet or Online: Where to Shop
A full-price coach store offers the current collections, and the grandest flagships go by the Coach House name. The New York Coach House on Fifth Avenue reportedly opened in 2016, and a new Coach House at 645 Fifth Avenue has been reported as planned for 2027. London’s Coach House on Regent Street also opened in 2016, and in the UK the brand is stocked by Harrods, Selfridges and John Lewis as well. Anyone hunting for a structured coach bag, a coach tote bag or a new jacket in the latest season’s styles will find it in the full-price range.
Coach Outlet, which is Coach’s own official channel, includes outlet stores plus an official online outlet section on Coach’s own website. Product made for the outlet channel was put at around 85% of outlet goods in a 2014 quote from Coach’s head of investor relations, but that figure is dated, and Tapestry has since discussed bringing some full-price product into outlets. The public evidence does not support the claim that outlet bags are invariably worse, or no different from boutique bags. Bicester Village, Cheshire Oaks and Ashford Designer Outlet all have UK outlet stores. Shoppers sometimes type “couch” or “cosch” when searching for the brand, so check that any site promising steep discounts is really Coach’s own website or a known retailer.
